The importance of buying your Christmas tree locally

With reports about potential Christmas tree shortages this year, Petite Peonys Christmas Trees are here to highlight why it has never been more important buy locally.

Cambridgeshire, UK, ** October 2021

Petite Peonys Christmas Trees, growers of the finest Christmas Trees at Willock Farm in Cambridgeshire, have sustainability and responsibility at the heart of everything they do. This year they are highlighting the importance of buying a local, sustainably grown Christmas Tree.

Why buy local?

Buying local means that you will have a fresh, traceable, and often sustainable tree. Selecting your tree directly from Willock Farm means that you are getting the freshest tree possible, whilst also reducing transport miles by buying local, and so reducing your carbon footprint too.

About their trees

Choosing a Christmas Tree is a magical experience. For many, it marks the start of Christmas celebrations. Petite Peonys grow and sell Norman Fir trees, arguably one of the most popular varieties. These are the 'no needle drop' variety, which are easier to look after and stay fresher for longer.

All of their trees:

Have been matured for 7 years, for the best full bodied foliage and quality

Are grown on their 100 acre farm, with many acres set aside for wildlife and conservation

Are replaced by two more trees for long term sustainability.

Are grown locally, giving the freshest trees and reducing carbon footprint

Are grown with minimal chemical use

Are grown for 7 years absorbing carbon from the atmosphere, reducing carbon footprint even further

With climate change and reducing carbon footprint high on the priority list for many, choosing a real tree and knowing how to dispose of it at the end of the season is important.

Myles Mc-Carthy of the Carbon Trust says.

“As long as you dispose of a real tree responsibly, the footprint is pretty small because it absorbs a lot of CO2 in its growth. We estimate it at 3.5kg [8lb]. So, 10 to 12 times less than an artificial tree.”

Most local authorities offer Christmas-tree schemes that will recycle your tree into compost or woodchip mulch. We also offer our own recycling scheme allowing our clients to return their Christmas Trees for disposal at our farm.

Choosing the right tree

It's important to check the quality of your Christmas Tree. Visitors are welcome to the farm to choose trees, and making sure that the needles are green and feel soft and pliable, not brown and brittle, is highly important.

And if you are worried about securing your freshest Christmas tree this year, you can reserve your Petite Peonys Christmas Tree online today. If you purchase online and opt for delivery, the team will inspect and select your tree on your behalf.

There are plenty of trees to choose from at the farm, so don’t be disillusioned by the reports that you’ll be without a tree this year.
